Project 2: Quantum Dots

Overview

Designers:

Emmanuelle Deleporte, Jean-Sébastien Lauret

Semiconductor quantum dots and quantum wells are heterostructures in which electrons are spatially confined in 3D and 1D, respectively. This quantum confinement greatly influences the properties of these structures, particularly their optoelectronic properties, thereby giving them significant potential for technological applications: light-emitting diodes, lasers, light detectors, etc.

Photoluminescence spectroscopy is a powerful optical technique for studying the electronic properties of semiconductor materials. It involves observing the emission spectrum of the material when it is excited to an energy higher than the bandgap. Analysis of the light emission spectrum provides information about the material’s electronic band structure. In particular, it reveals the appearance of discrete states generated by quantum confinement.
